Position Purpose
The Lower School seeks a warm, thoughtful, and skilled educator to serve as a homeroom teacher. The teacher will create a joyful and structured classroom where students build strong academic foundations, develop confidence as learners, and engage with ideas through inquiry, collaboration, and meaningful relationships. Our Lower School values joyful learning, thoughtful inquiry, and the development of confident, curious students. Teachers in the Lower School work collaboratively with colleagues to continually strengthen teaching through reflection, shared planning, and engagement with research on how children learn. This position starts August 28, 2026.
Essential Functions
I. Student Instruction:
- Designs and facilitates engaging learning experiences that support students' development in literacy, mathematics, social studies, and social-emotional learning.
- Implements, adapts, and extends research-informed curriculum and instructional practices to meet the needs of individual learners.
- Observes students carefully and uses multiple measures of assessment to inform instruction and support student growth.
- Fosters curiosity, creativity, and confidence through inquiry, collaboration, hands-on learning, and other active classroom structures.
- Establishes a positive and inclusive classroom environment with clear expectations that support strong behavior and social development.
- Collaborates with colleagues to reflect on student learning, strengthen curriculum, and support the growth of all students.
II. Family Partnerships:
- Communicates regularly with families about student growth, classroom experiences, and learning goals.
- Conducts bi-annual parent conferences.
- Writes bi-annual narrative reports.
III. Professional Conduct:
- Builds and maintains collaborative working relationships with colleagues and administrators.
- Contributes positively to the division's culture.
- Engages in professional learning and reflective practice to strengthen teaching.
IV. Other Duties Assigned by the Head of Lower School.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree in Elementary Education or related field preferred.
- At least three years of experience teaching elementary-aged students preferred.
- Strong knowledge of elementary curriculum, pedagogy, and child development.
- Experience teaching literacy using methodologies aligned with the Science of Reading.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive classroom where all students and families feel valued and supported.
- Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members with a continuous focus on healthy relationship building.
- Demonstrated deep understanding of cultural competency skills and enthusiasm for issues of diversity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism.
- Continued engagement in professional learning experiences.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
- Able to move around all school environments.
- Regularly use close and distant vision.
